No-Sew Fleece Poncho



A quick & easy poncho creation is at your fingertips with our No-Sew Fleece Poncho DIY!

Make it a family activity! Allow the kids to pick the fleece fabric they want their poncho made from, and get them to help with cutting or tying the fleece knots.

Not a sewist? Not a problem! This project is ideal for all levels of maker with no sewing machine required.

What you need:

  • 48" (1.25m) Fleece
  • Scissors / Rotary Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Straight Pins
  • Optional: Fabric Chalk

Note: Before buying fabric check the measurement chart. These recommendations are for an adult sized poncho.

  • Arctic Fleece
  • Micro Fleece
  • Plaid Bonded Fleece
  • Outback Fleece
  • Mountain Fleece
  • Coral Fleece
  • Lambskin Fleece

Tips before you start

  • It’s a good idea to pre-wash your fabric before you start.
  • Decide on the size of your poncho (see measurement chart) before you measure and cut your fabric.

Step 1: Remove The Selvage

Cut off the selvage edges.

Step 2: Cut the Fleece Into Two Pieces

Cut on the width to make two pieces into these dimensions:

Step 3: Cut a Square from Each Corner

Cut out a 4" (10cm) square from each corner of the two fleece rectangles.

Step 4: Optional Marking

Mark the fabric with fabric chalk or reference back to this descriptive photo on how all the “A” and “B” pieces should connect together.

Step 5: Place Each Piece Side By Side

With right sides facing up, place each piece side by side on the marks from Step 4.

Step 6: Pin A to A and B to B

Pin the top of A to the side A with wrong sides together. Do the same with Bs. (Refer to Step 4)

Step 7: Cut Fringe

Cut 4"(10cm) deep and 1"(2.5cm) apart along the pinned area.

Note: See under step 8 to see other types of fringe styles before cutting as some fringe requires different depths and widths.

Step 8: Tie the Fringe

Tie the fringe of each side together.

Step 9: Make Fringe on Remainder

Cut fringe on the bottom of the poncho. Cut 4"(10cm) deep and 1"(2.5cm) apart.

The Poncho is Complete!
