Feature Nine Patch Quilt Block

What you need:

4 x different 100% cotton fabrics, with the suggested combination of colours and prints below. If using fabric off bolt you will need:
(A) Feature piece - 15-20cm (between 6” to 8”): choose section/design that you want to feature before cutting the fabric from the bolt.
(B) Solid white colour - 10cm (approx 4”) strips
(C) Lighter colour print* - 10cm (approx 4”) strips
(D) Darker colour print - 10cm (approx 4”) strips
*You can also use a solid white fabric in your 9 patch portion of the block if you want to make the Feature Piece to “pop” more instead of using a lighter colour print.

Tips before you start

  • Pre-wash and press your fabric before you start to avoid shrinkage. Follow the care instructions for your chosen fabric.
  • Press using a pressing cloth to prevent damaging your fabric. Test your iron settings on a scrap piece of fabric before you start your project.

Step 1: Cut the pieces

(A) Feature piece - cut 2 squares of 5”x5” (approx 12.7 x 12.7cm) from section/design that you want to feature.

(B) Solid white colour - cut 2 rectangles of 6.5”x2.25” (approx 16.5 x 5.8cm) + 2 rectangles of 5”x2.25” (approx 12.7 x 5.8cm)

(C) Lighter colour print* - cut 8 squares of 2.5”x2.5” (approx 5.8 x 5.8cm)

(D) Darker colour print - cut 10 squares of 2.5“x2.5” (approx 5.8 x 5.8cm)

Step 2: Assemble the Feature Blocks

Take one Feature Piece (A) and attach a 5”x2.25” (approx 12.7 x 5.8cm) Solid white rectangle (B) to the top and then a 6”x2.25” (approx 16.5 x 5.8cm) rectangle to the left side of it.


Take the other Feature Piece and add a 5”x2.25” Solid white rectangle to the bottom of it and a 6”x2.25” rectangle to the right of it. Stitch the strips together using 0.25” (approx 6mm) of seam allowance.

Trim these completed parts of the blocks to 6.5”x6.5” (approx 16.5 x 16.5cm).

They should look like this:

Step 3: Assemble the Nine Patch Blocks

Take five of the Darker print squares (D) and four of Lighter print squares (C) to form a nine patch block.

First sew the squares of each row together Then sew Row 1 to Row 2 and then add Row 3. Press.

Sew the Rows Together

Sew Row 1 to Row 2 and then add Row 3. Press flat.

Step 4: Assemble the Final Blocks

Take the previous assembled blocks and follow the placement below:

1 - Sew top blocks together and the bottom two blocks together.

2 - Then sew the top to the bottow row.

Press and trim to 12.5”x12.5”(approx 31.8 x 31.8cm).
