Cut Fabric to Size


Background (White) 0.3 metres

Piece A: cut 2 4 1/4”w x 3 1/4”h

Piece B: cut 1 3 1/2”w x 2 3/8”h

Piece C: cut 1 11”w x 1 1/4”h

Piece D: cut 6 1 3/8”w x 1 3/8”h

Piece G: cut 2 31/8”w x 1 3/4”h

Piece L: cut 2 2 1/4”w x 2 1/8”h

Piece N: cut 2 1 5/8”w x 33/8”h

Piece O: cut 2 2 1/4”w x 33/8”h

Piece P: cut 1 11”w x 1 3/4”h


Appliqué requires a small piece of Red and Green fabric.

Topping (Dark Pink & Light Pink) 0.2 metres of each colour

*Cut 1 of each colour


Piece E & F: 3 1/2”w x 1 3/8”h

Piece H & I: 53/4”w x 1 3/4”h

Piece J & K: 71/2”w x 2 1/8”h


Cupcake Wrapper (Red) 0.2 metres

Piece M: cut 1 71/2”w x 33/8”h


Boarder (Green) 0.3 metres

Piece Q: cut 2 11”w x 11/4”h

Piece R: cut 2 11/4”w x 121/2”h

What you need:

  • 5 different colours of 100% cotton fabrics
  • Sewing Machine
  • Fusible Web
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Cutting Mat
  • Quilting Ruler
  • Iron

Tips Before You Start

  • Use a 1/4” seam allowance
  • Press seam allowances to one side after each step
  • Square up each row before joining using a quilting ruler and rotary cutter
  • Sew every seam with the right sides of your fabric facing each other.

Instructions


Row 1


Step 1:

  • Sew Pieces E and F with right sides together. Align the corners and sew a diagonal line through the pieces from the bottom left to the top right corner (Diagram 1).
  • Trim the seam allowance to a 1/4” width (Diagram 2)
  • Press Piece F upwards (Diagram 3).

Step 2:

  • Sew a D piece to top left and right corner of the FE piece with right sides together. (Diagram 4)
  • Trim down corners to seam allowance to 1/4” width. (Diagram 5)
  • Press piece D upwards so it looks like Diagram 6

Step 3:

Sew B Piece to the top of piece FED. (see the result in diagram 7)

Step 4:

Sew an A piece to the left side and the other A piece to the right side of your FEDB Piece to complete Row 1. (see the result in diagram 8)

Row 2


Step 5:

Repeat step 1 using pieces H and I.

Step 6:

Repeat step 2, adding piece D to the corners of piece HI

Step 7:

Sew one G piece to the left side and the other G piece to the right side of your HID Piece to complete Row 2. (see the result in diagram 11)

Step 8:

Stitch row 1 to row 2 with right sides together. (see the result in diagram Diagram 12)

Row 3


Step 9:

Repeat steps 5 to 7 with the row 3 pieces. (Diagram 12)

Step 10:

Stitch row 3 to the bottom of row 2 with right sides together. (see the result in diagram diagram 14)

Row 4


Step 11:

  • Place the N pieces on either side of piece M, matching up the corners as shown in diagram 15.
  • Sew corner to corner, as shown in diagram 15
  • Trim the seam allowance to 1/4” and press press it to one side.

Step 12:

Sew the remaining O pieces to either side of your MN piece (see the result in diagram 17)

Step 13:

Sew row 4 to row 3 as indicated (Diagram 18)

Step 14:

Sew piece C to the top of the block and piece P to the bottom of the block. (Diagram 19)

Border


Step 15:

  • Sew the Q pieces to the top and bottom of the block.
  • Sew the R pieces to the left and right sides of the block. (Diagram 20)

Appliqué


Step 16:

  • Top off your cupcake with a strawberry appliqué and apply using fusible web.
  • Topstitch or blanket stitch the outsides for a finished look.
