a) A traditional square knot is comprised of four strands - the two centre strands, and the two outer strands
b) Take the outer right strand, and put it behind the rest, leaving a small loop.
c) Take the outer left strand, and put it in front of the others, leaving a small loop.
d) From the back, insert the tail of the right strand into the loop of the left strand
e) From the front, insert the tail of the left strand into the loop of the right strand.
f) Pull both outer strands taut, making sure to keep the centre strand straight. You have now completed a half square knot.
To complete the square knot, repeat the same steps, but put the right side in front, and the left side behind.
a) Cut an 18” inch length of String Macramé.
b) Holding the grouping of strands in one hand, place the end of the 18” piece alongside the other strands.
c) To create the wrap knot, close your hand around the bundle of strands, and bring the end of the 18” piece up over your fingers.
d) Bracing the bundle of strands with one hand, use your other hand to wrap the 18” piece around the bundle 6 times.
e) Insert the end of the single strand you’ve wrapped through the loop, and carefully pull the top strand. Then, pull both ends taut.
f) Cut off any excess and gently push the ends into the wrapped bundle to hide.
The amount of times you wrap the strand around is based on your personal aesthetic. The minimum advisable amount of wraps is five
a) In this design, beads are added to a square knot with six strands. The centre two strands remain the same, but there are two outer strands on each side instead of one.
b) To successfully thread the beads onto the centre strand, tape the bottom with a short length of clear tape
c) To start, take the inner strands (pink) and tie a half square knot. See page 4.
d) Lift the inner (pink) strands up to move them out of the way
e) Tie a half square knot with the outer (yellow) strands
f) Add one wooden bead to the centre strands.
g) Push the bead up so it touches the half square knot.
h) Using the yellow strands, finish the half square knot below the bead, pulling tightly.
i) Lift up the yellow strands to move them out of the way.
j) Tie a half square knot with the pink strands.
k) Add on another bead, and tie a half square knot with the pink strands.
l) Move the pink strands out of the way, and tie a half square knot with the yellow strands. Continue until you reach your desired length.
a) Cut an 18” inch length of String Macramé.
8 pieces of yarn each 12 ft long (366 cm)
4 pieces of yarn each 14 ft long (427 cm)
The longer strands will act as the outer strands of the square knot to make the handle.
a) Gather all the strands (12 total), and fold them in half at the 6ft mark. The four longer strands should hang 2 ft longer on one side.
b) Add a craft clip 2.5 inches away from the centre on the side opposite the longer ends
c) Using the four longer strands, create a large square knot. Continue to make square knots until the handle reaches 5 inches in length.
a) Fold the handle in half, and create a wrap tie around the base, wrapping around six times.
a) To add an O-Ring, take one strand of yarn and put it over the outer side of the ring.
b) Take the end of the strand, and put it inside the circle, and let it drape over the outer side of the ring. Repeat with the remaining strands.
a) Separate the strands into four groups of six strands. Use craft clips to keep them organized.
b) Add 15 beads to each set of strings using the instructions on page 6 - “How to Tie a Square Knot with Beads.” You can add as many beads as you would like for your desired length.
a) Once you have completed all four bead chains, you can create the basket for your plant.
b) Separate the strands into two for each chain.
c) Clip the two inner strands together 3.5 inches down, leaving one strand on either side.
d) - e) Create a square knot underneath the clip. Repeat steps 6 b) - d) at the other junctions
f) Make a wrap knot starting 3.5 inches down, wrapping around 10 times.
a) Repeat steps 4 - 6 on the second tier
b) After the last wrap knot, cut the pieces of yarn so they are all 5 inches long. Brush them out for a softer look.
