Sew a French Seam

A French Seam is ideal for sheer or lightweight fabrics, especially ones prone to fraying, and provides a clean finish without the need for a serger. This type of seam is also stronger than a regular seam because you’re sewing the seam twice.

Follow these steps to create your own French Seam:

  1. Pin the wrong side of your fabric pieces together, and straight stitch, using a 3/8” seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance in half.
  2. Fold the right sides of the fabric over the seam. Stitch again, this time using a 1/4" seam allowance to encase the raw edge.

NOTE: The seam allowance can be changed depending on your project.
