Resize a Christmas Stocking Pattern

Using the 'Slash and Spread' method, you can resize a pattern with just a few simple cuts - no complicated math or expensive tools required. This same technique works for pant legs, sleeves, or any pattern where you want to adjust width or length.

A Christmas stocking is the perfect place to practice before moving on to larger garment projects!

How to Alter a Stocking Pattern

  1. Draw a vertical line on each pattern piece where you want to add or reduce width. The line must be parallel to the grainline.
  2. Draw a horizontal line where you want to adjust height. These lines must be perpendicular (90°) to the vertical lines.
  3. Transfer your lines to a large piece of paper to create guidelines.
  4. Cut along the lines on your pattern.
  5. Decide how much size you’d like to add or remove. Measure from your guideline and draw new parallel lines.
  6. Spread (or overlap) the pattern pieces to resize, aligning everything with your guidelines to keep the grainline and shape intact.
  7. Redraw the outer edges to complete your new pattern.

Pro Tip: When resizing garments, it’s best to remove seam allowances first and adjust using the sewing lines.
