Tips & Tricks: Replicating Your Favourite Outfit

There is nothing more satisfying than replicating a favourite outfit.

One of the tricks to cloning your clothes is finding a material with the same stretch as your original piece of clothing.

Lay out your fabric flat, with your garment on top, and carefully cut out the pieces (including seam allowance), making sure the stretch is in the right direction.

The material shown in the video has a bit more stretch than the dress being used as a pattern, so to compensate for the difference a quarter inch was taken off each seam.

For a little more elasticity in your stitch, grab a stretch needle and sew up your seams with a triple straight stitch - otherwise known as a stretch stitch.

If there’s something you’d want to change about your original piece of clothing, you can cut the fabric a little differently to reflect that. For example, the little flair at the wrists to give the sleeves a bellbottom shape.

Sew all the pieces together, and hem the raw edges.

A herringbone stitch was used here to keep the edges stretchy and looking clean, but you can use any stitch you want.
