Follow along to learn how to dye our Tailor
Yarns 'To Dye For Yarn' with Rit® Dye. The yarn
featured is wool, but there's
also a cotton version available.
- First, start by pre-soaking your yarn for 30 minutes. To fully submerge the yarn we used 2L
of hot water per skein. We’re dyeing two skeins, so we used 4L of water.
- Once 30 minutes has passed, pour out the water and refresh it with more hot water. We added
1L per skein of yarn.
- If you're dyeing wool, add 22ml of vinegar per 1L of water. Also add in a couple drops of
liquid dish soap.
- The general rule of thumb is to add 12ml of dye per 1L of water.
- For this design we randomly poured in the two types of dye and mixed it around lightly with
a spoon.
- Let the dye sit for 30 minutes to an hour. Pour out the dye mixture and rinse the yarn in
cold water. If you're using cotton yarn, you can refresh the water and add 5ml of ColorStay
Dye Fixative per 1L of water.
- Ring out all the water and hang up your yarn to dry in a warm, sunny spot.
- Once it's dry you can wind it up into a ball and you're ready to go.
NOTE: The seam allowance can be changed depending on your project.
